Setting Up Villager AI Chat

Villagers can hold real conversations using ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini with your own API key, or a free local model. All of them are optional, and each service keeps its own key and model, so you can switch between them.

Online services charge per use on your own account. Replies are short, so the cost per chat is small.

Set it up in game

  1. Load a world as its owner (single player) or as an operator. The Lunar Folk AI Chat setup screen pops up while no AI is set up.
  2. Click Service to pick ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Ollama, LM Studio, OpenRouter or Other.
  3. Check the Model (a default is filled in) and paste your API key. It's hidden as you type. Get Key opens the service's key page.
  4. Click Save & Test. Chat confirms the AI is connected with a test reply, or says what went wrong: a rejected key, a wrong model, no credit left or no connection.
  5. Sneak + right-click a villager and start talking.

Not Now closes the screen until the next world load. Don't Ask Again stops it popping up. Reopen it any time with /eclipsegate aichat, or from the main menu with Mods > Eclipse Gate > Config.

Or edit the config file

Everything is saved to config/eclipsegate-common.toml, on the server or on your own PC in single player:

toml Copy
[villager_chat]
enabled = true
service = "claude" # chatgpt, claude, gemini or other

[villager_chat.claude]
api_key = "your-key-here"
model = "claude-haiku-5-5"

[villager_chat.other] # Ollama, LM Studio, OpenRouter...
endpoint = "http://localhost:11434/v1/chat/completions"
model = "llama3.2"

Keys stay in that file and are never sent to other players. On a hosted server, a model running on your home PC can't be reached, so use an online service there.
