Multiplayer
This article is for Chevron TenChevron Ten is built for playing with friends. This page walks you through joining up as a team, sharing your base and progress, and running your own server.
Part 1: Playing together
Step 1: Make a team
Teams share quest progress and claimed land.
- One player creates the party:
/ftbteams party create <name> - Invite your friends:
/ftbteams party invite <player> - Each friend accepts the invite from the chat message or with
/ftbteams party join <name>.
Tip: Check the Getting Started chapter's Assemble the Squad quest once your team is set up.
Step 2: Claim your base together
Open the FTB Chunks map and drag across chunks to claim them. Claims belong to your team, so every teammate can build there and outsiders can't.
| Claim setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Claim | Protects blocks from other players and explosions |
| Force-load | Keeps the chunk running while nobody's nearby, so farms and machines keep working |
Server owners: Each team has a limit on claimed and force-loaded chunks. Change it in the FTB Chunks server config.
Step 3: Share your map
JourneyMap Shared Maps shares waypoints with your team. Mark your base, your Stargate, every Waystone and every outpost once, and everyone sees them.
Step 4: Talk to each other
| Feature | Mod | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Proximity voice chat | Simple Voice Chat | Talk to players near you. Set your mic and push-to-talk key in its settings (search "Voice" in Controls). |
| See who's typing or idle | What Are They Up To | Works automatically |
| Show what you're playing | CraftPresence | Shows the pack in your Discord status |
| Images in chat | Discord and Chat Images | Paste image links and they show up in chat |
Step 5: Split the work
With a shared quest book, a team can split up the chapters. Here's one way to do it:
| Role | Chapters |
|---|---|
| Engineer | Create, Create Addons, Heavy Industry |
| Gate Technician | The Stargate Program |
| Astronaut | To the Stars |
| Explorer | Exploration, Alien Evolution |
| Quartermaster | Storage Solutions, Farm to Table |
Teammates' completed quests count for everyone, so the whole team moves forward together.
Part 2: Running a server
Step 1: Build the server files
- Make a server pack from the modpack. Remove client-only mods, which the server doesn't need. ServerPackCreator can do this for you.
- Install Forge for 1.20.1 in the server folder with the Forge installer's "Install server" option.
- Copy in the
modsandconfigfolders from the server pack. - Make sure
config/ftbquests/questsis included, so the server has the quest book.
Step 2: Give it enough memory
Give the server at least 6–8 GB of RAM, plus about 1 GB for each extra player. A pack this size starts slowly the first time, so give it a few minutes.
Step 3: Open the ports
| Port | Protocol | For |
|---|---|---|
| 25565 | TCP | Minecraft itself |
| 24454 | UDP | Simple Voice Chat |
If players can join but voice chat doesn't work, the UDP 24454 port is usually the problem.
Step 4: Set yourself up as an operator
Run op <your name> in the server console. As an operator, you can:
- Turn on edit mode in the quest book (the pencil icon) and fix quests live. Changes save to the server's files and sync to everyone.
- Change FTB Chunks claim limits and other server settings.
Server tips
| Tip | Why |
|---|---|
| Pre-generate the world | Exploring new chunks with this many world-gen mods is heavy. A pre-generation mod like Chunky keeps the server smooth. |
| Back up often | Especially before trying HBM's nuclear content or updating the pack |
| Keep everyone on the same version | Players need the same mods and versions as the server to join |
