Ad Astra adds rockets and whole planets. Each planet has a new metal, and each new metal builds a rocket that reaches the next planet. This page walks you through the To the Stars chapter from your first steel to Calorite.

Your in-game guide: Ad Astra comes with the Astrodux, a guidebook with every machine and planet. Check it whenever this page isn't enough.

Tier 2MarsOstrum
Tier 3Venus and MercuryCalorite (on Venus)
Tier 4Glacio

Each rocket is built from the metal of the planet before it.

Step 1: Space-grade steel

Quest: Space-Grade Steel (16 Ad Astra Steel Ingots)

Ad Astra uses its own Steel Ingots. Press R on one in JEI to see which machines make it in this pack.

Step 2: Build the workshop

Quests: NASA Workbench · Fuel Refinery · Oxygen Loader

MachineWhat it does
NASA WorkbenchWhere you build every rocket
Fuel RefineryTurns oil into rocket fuel
Oxygen LoaderFills your space suit with oxygen

These machines run on power (FE). Hook them up to a generator from Mekanism or Create Crafts and Additions.

Tip: Press U on the Fuel Refinery's input in JEI to see where to get oil in this pack.

Step 3: Suit up

Quest: Suit Up

Craft the full space suit: Space Helmet, Space Suit, Space Pants and Space Boots. Then fill it at the Oxygen Loader.

Warning: Most planets have no air. Without a filled suit you'll start suffocating as soon as you land. Some planets are also extremely hot or cold.

Step 4: Launch

Quests: Launch Pad → Tier 1 Rocket → One Small Step

  1. Craft a Launch Pad and place it in an open area.
  2. Build a Tier 1 Rocket at the NASA Workbench.
  3. Place the rocket on the Launch Pad and fuel it.
  4. Get in, launch and pick the Moon from the planet menu.
  5. One Small Step completes when you land.
Before you launch: Bring food, building blocks and enough fuel or materials to get home. It's a good idea to set a waypoint and bring a spare Launch Pad.

Step 5: Desh and the Tier 2 Rocket

Quests: Desh → Tier 2 Rocket

  1. Mine Desh on the Moon and smelt it. You need 16 Desh Ingots.
  2. Build a Tier 2 Rocket at the NASA Workbench.

Step 6: Mars

Quest: The Red Planet

Fly your Tier 2 Rocket to Mars. The quest completes when you land.

Step 7: Ostrum and Calorite

Quests: Ostrum → Calorite (finale)

  1. Mine Ostrum on Mars. You need 16 Ostrum Ingots.
  2. Build a Tier 3 Rocket with Ostrum and fly to Venus.
  3. Mine Calorite on Venus. You need 16 Calorite Ingots for the finale, which gives 1,500 XP.

Side trips

  • Asteroid Belt (optional quest): The Ad Astra Asteroid Belt addon adds an asteroid belt to visit.
  • Creating Space (optional quest): Build Create-powered rockets instead of Ad Astra ones.
  • Ad Astra Extra and Extra Additions add more content to the planets. Browse them in JEI with @ad_astra.

Survival tips in space

TipWhy
Refill oxygen oftenYour suit runs out, and suffocating far from home is a bad way to lose your gear
Bring blocksLow gravity and craters make it easy to get stuck
Set a waypoint at your rocketPlanets look the same in every direction
Watch the temperatureSome planets are too hot or cold for a basic suit
